This May, the Mortal Kombat movie series returns with a new entry. The movie – a follow-up to 2021’s Mortal Kombat – stars Karl Urban, Ludi Lin, Jessica McNamee, and Mehcad Brooks, and sees Johnny Cage team up with the champions of Earthrealm for a huge battle.
Describing the movie, New Line Cinema said: “From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes instalment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II.
“This time, the fan favourite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.”
Featuring fan-favourite characters such as Scorpion, Raiden, and Sonya Blade, Mortal Kombat II (aka Mortal Kombat 2) is sure to be a popular film choice with fans of the Mortal Kombat video game series. But when the movie drops, will it be a film suitable for all, including video game-playing teens?
Let’s take a look at the rating.

Mortal Kombat II UK age rating

In the UK, Mortal Kombat II has been awarded a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has received this rating due to “strong bloody violence, (and) infrequent very strong language.”
In the UK ‘15’ certificate movies are deemed suitable for audiences aged 15 or over only, meaning no one below the age of 15 is permitted to watch a ‘15’ certificate film in a UK cinema. It doesn’t matter if you’re a parent and you plan to accompany your teenage gamer to a screening, unless they are 15 they will not be let in.
As such, the BBFC believe Mortal Kombat II is not suitable for everyone, and definitely not suitable for some teenagers (14, 13, or anyone younger, etc). However, if your child is 15, 16 and so on, they will be fine.

Mortal Kombat II US age rating

In the US, Mortal Kombat II has been rated ‘R’ by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA), which means the movie is classed as ‘restricted’ viewing. Mortal Kombat II has received this rating due to strong bloody violence and gore, and bad language.
In the US, restricted viewing means no one under the age of 17 can view an ‘R’ rated movie unaccompanied. The MPA believe the film contains some material which might not be suitable for all ages.
However, in the US, audiences below the age of 17 can watch an ‘R’ rated movie in a US cinema, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. This means, your game-obsessed teen could watch Mortal Kombat II as long as an adult is in attendance.
The MPA use the rating system as a guidance, and allow you the parent to take it from there. The organisation presumes you will decide if the movie is suitable, based on the information provided, and act accordingly.
