The summer blockbuster season is not far off now, and when it arrives film fans across the world will be treated to a wealth of new movies. From Masters of the Universe and The Odyssey, to The Sheep Detectives and The Mandalorian and Grogu, there’s plenty of top titles to tempt audiences into cinemas for some big screen escapism.
But amongst all of the major summer releases there are a number of unexpected sequels. Sure, we all know the film industry loves a sequel, but did anyone expect a new Air Bud movie to be tossed into the mix this summer?! Nope, probably not.
Anyway, here are some of the unexpected sequels on the horizon for Summer 2026…

Scary Movie

This one won’t necessarily come as a huge surprise, as you’ve probably caught the recent preview trailer, but did anyone have a new Scary Movie sequel on their bingo card? The last instalment, Scary Movie 5 (the one with Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan etc) came out in 2013 and was universally panned, so did anyone expect a franchise resurrection in 2026?
Well, it’s on its way, and the general consensus is that audiences are open to a new sequel and things are looking promising on the creative front. The Wayans brothers are back on the writing team, while the cast includes many of the main players from the original team including Anna Faris back as Cindy Campbell and Regina Hall as Brenda Meeks.
As for story, expect plenty of spoofs, parodies, and general slapstick nonsense. The Scream movies, Get Out, Weapons, Halloween, Smile, The Stuff, and even the Terrifier are being tossed into the melting pot of mirth and madness this time around.
Release: June 5th

Also due Summer 2026…
The Devil Wears Prada 2 – This one should not come as a surprise simply because 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada was such a popular movie with critics and audiences alike. But it is still an unexpected sequel because it has taken twenty years to arrive! Anyway, The Devil Wears Prada 2 lands in cinemas in May, reunites Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci with director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna, and sees Andy Sachs positioned as the new features editor for Runway magazine. Release: May 1st
Jackass 5 – The Jackass movie series is a curious one, because every once in a while (when least expected) a new entry will just randomly appear. Case in point: Jackass 5 which will be landing this summer. Expect plenty of stunts, and maybe some minor injuries, as expert pranksters Johnny Knoxville and Co. return for what is reportedly the final hurrah. Release: June 26th

Super Troopers 3

Talk about long gaps between sequels. For those keeping track, the first entry in the Super Troopersmovie series debuted in 2001, while the second didn’t arrive until 2018. This third instalment drops in July 2026, meaning the gap is closing, but it has still been eight years!
Anyway, Jay Chandrasekhar is back on director duties, while the cast includes Paul Soter, Steve Lemme, Erik Stolhanske, Kevin Heffernan, and Brian Cox. Prepare to have your ribs tickled.
Release: July 7th

Also due Summer 2026…
Fall 2 – The absolutely ludicrous Fall – a movie about two terrified woman trapped on top of a dreadfully unstable broadcasting tower – arrived in 2022 and seemed very much like a ‘one and done’ kind of thing, but no, there’s more! This time around there’s a mountain and a rockslide to contend with, as directors Peter and Michael Spierig attempt to place a new set of characters in danger. Release: July 7th
Air Bud Returns – No, your eyes are not deceiving you, Air Bud is back! The film series which originally began in 1997, and has had three incarnations (Air Bud, Air Buddies, and Santa Paws) returns for a 15th instalment, which sees a young boy and a Golden Retriever join a basketball team and shoot some hoops. Release: August 21st

The best of the rest…

Other sequels to expect this summer (which are perhaps not so unexpected) include Mortal Kombat II, Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters, Evil Dead Burn, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Insidious: The Bleeding World. Plus, just slipping outside of the main summer season is Practical Magic 2, which arrives in September.
