This March, fantasy horror movie, The Bride! arrives in cinemas. Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the film stars Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in a reworking of The Bride of Frankenstein.

Describing the new movie, Warner Bros. said: “A lonely Frankenstein (Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Buckley) is born.

“What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!”

When The Bride! arrives in movie theatres expect it to be a popular film. The original Bride of Frankenstein is considered to be one of the greatest horror movies of all time, and the opportunity to watch a new take on this classic is too tempting to resist.

But when the movie does make its debut, will it be suitable for all ages, including teenagers? Let’s take a look at the rating to find out.

The Bride! UK age rating

In the UK, The Bride! has been awarded a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The movie has received this rating due to “strong bloody violence, gore, sexual violence, sex, (and) very strong language.”

In the UK, a ‘15’ certificate movie is deemed suitable for audiences aged 15 or over. No one under this age will be admitted into a screening of The Bride! in a UK cinema.

As such, the BBFC believe The Bride! is suitable for some teens (those aged 15 or above), but not all teens (14, 13, or anyone below).

The Bride! US age rating

In the US, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has given The Bride! an ‘R’ rating for strong/bloody violent content, sexual content/nudity and language.

When it comes to the ‘R’ rating, movies with this rating are classed as ‘restricted’. This means no one under the age of 17 can view an ‘R’ rated movie unless they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

The MPAA’s guidance is that ‘R’ rated movies contain some adult material. As such, parents are urged to learn more about the movie before taking their young children with them.

So, yes, a teenager can watch an ‘R’ rated movie in a US cinema, as long as they are accompanied. But the MPAA suggests parents read up on the film first, to decide if it’s really suitable viewing.
