In 2000, spoof slasher film, Scary Movie chuckled its way into cinemas. The horror-comedy, conceived as a parody of Scream, Scream 2, and I Know What You Did Last Summer, followed the story of a group of teens who are stalked by a masked killer.
Upon release, Scary Movie proved popular with audiences and became a box-office and home video hit. This in turn resulted in the production of multiple sequels, which continued the series and parodied other movies.

The Scary Movie movies in order
Scary Movie (2000)
As noted above, the first entry in the Scary Movie film series made its debut in 2000, largely as a spoof of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. The story focused on a group of teens – including franchise leads Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks – who are stalked by a masked killer.
In the film, it is one year since the teens accidentally hit a man with their car, dumped his body, and pretended the incident never happened. It now appears as if someone is aware of their crime and is killing them off one by one. (88 mins)
Scary Movie 2 (2001)
Due to the success of Scary Movie, a sequel followed a year later, reuniting members of the cast (including those whose characters were previously killed off) for more horror hijinks. However, unlike the first film, which significantly parodied the first two Scream movies, Scary Movie 2 was a general supernatural spoof of the haunted house genre.
Scary Movie 2 included nods to films such as House on Haunted Hill, The Exorcist, and Poltergeist, alongside some non-horror movies including Charlie’s Angels and Dude, Where’s My Car? (82 mins)
Scary Movie 3 (2003)
The third Scary Movie movie arrived in 2003, offering yet more parodies. The story turned its attention to a cursed tape and crop circles – parodies of The Ring and Signs respectively – but other movie spoofs included The Matrix Reloaded and 8 Mile. (84 mins)
Scary Movie 4 (2006)
After a three year break, Scary Movie 4 hit screens in 2006, with the main focus being a parody of the Tom Cruise film, War of the Worlds. Other movies being spoofed included The Grudge, Saw II, and The Village.
As with the previous entries, Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks were key figures in the film. However, by this point the storyline was largely about connecting one spoof to the next. (83 mins)
Scary Movie 5 (2013)
Seven years passed before the next entry, 2013’s Scary Movie 5. Unlike the four previous movies, which included Cindy and Brenda, this film was a standalone sequel which focused on new characters.

Scary Movie 6 (2026)
Following the release of Scary Movie 5, the series went on hiatus for 13 years before retuning in 2026. For Scary Movie 6, many of the original cast and characters are brought back, including Cindy Campbell.
