In 1985, animated action-adventure movie, He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword made its way into cinemas. The fantasy film from Filmation was positioned as a spin-off from the popular 1983 cartoon, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, as well as an introduction to the forthcoming She-Ra: Princess of Power show.
In reality, the film was actually five episodes of the new She-Ra show simply edited together for theatrical viewing. It was cleverly released in cinemas ahead of the show’s debut, to introduce the new character to audiences, while taking advantage of the popularity of Masters of the Universe.
Following the release of He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword, further Masters of the Universe movies followed. But how many are there?

The Masters of the Universe movies
He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword (1985)
As noted above, the Masters of the Universe movie series began in 1985 with the theatrical release of He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword. The film followed the animated adventures of Prince Adam as he and his pal Cringer are sent from the planet Eternia to Etheria.
Here Adam discovers that Etheria is ruled by the evil Horde, and he meets Force Captain Adora – a Horde operative who fights the Rebellion. But as Adam soon comes to discover, deep down Adora is a good natured person, as well as his long lost sister.
Once the truth comes to light, Adam and Adora transform into their alter-egos, He-Man and She-Ra and team up to fight the evil Horde. (91 mins)
Masters of the Universe (1987)
Onto movie number two now, which is 1987’s Masters of the Universe. This live-action superhero movie follows He-Man and his friends as they travel to Earth in search of a powerful device known as the Cosmic Key.
In the film, expert locksmith, Gwildor invents the Cosmic Key, which has the ability to open portals to anywhere across the galaxy and beyond. He uses the Key to transport himself, He-Man, Man-At-Arms, and Teela to Earth in an attempt to escape from the clutches of the evil Skeletor.
Upon arrival on Earth, they lose the key which kick-starts a new quest. Meanwhile, Skeletor sends his forces to track down He-Man and retrieve the Cosmic Key in his ongoing desire for power. (106 mins)
Masters of the Universe (2026)
Onto movie number three, 2026’s Masters of the Universe – a live-action reboot of the Masters film franchise. In this film, ten-year-old Prince Adam is sent to Earth for his own protection during a time of civil war on his home planet of Eternia.
Twenty years later, the now-adult Adam returns to Eternia, where he discovers his lost birthright. From here he becomes He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, and the only hero who stands a chance of defeating the evil Skeletor.
