Inside No. 9

Over to TV Gold now for a show which has only just acquired its TV Gold status, having recently completed its impressive nine season run. The show is the superb British black comedy anthology series, Inside No. 9.

Written and created by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, Inside No. 9 is an incredibly clever, brilliantly penned series centred around a collection of self-contained 30-minute stories. Across the show’s 55-episode run, Inside No. 9 offers 55 different narratives, incorporating comedy, tragedy, horror, the weird, the wonderful, and so much more in between.

The basic premise of the show is as follows: Each instalment focuses on different characters encountering different scenarios, often with a twist at the end of the tale (Think Tales of the UnexpectedThe Twilight Zone, or Tales From the Crypt). The scenarios range from a witch trial and birthday surprise, to a silent burglary, an argument over a restaurant bill, and a reunion for a comedic double-act.

Creators Pemberton and Shearsmith appear in almost every episode, sometimes as the lead players, sometimes in bit parts, while the rest of the cast are completely different and usually consist of famous British actors. Along the way the cast are surrounded by a smorgasbord of clever and quirky stories designed to have viewers chuckling one minute, shedding a tear the next, and occasionally recoiling in terror.

During the show’s ten year-run on the BBC (2014-2024), Inside No. 9 was constantly praised by critics and fans alike, picking up multiple awards in the process. It also demonstrated endless innovation and creativity, often going beyond the realms of traditional TV, with episodes playing out like mini movies.

If you didn’t catch Inside No. 9 the first time around, or for some reason you’re not familiar with it, now is a great time to work your way through the series. Inside No. 9 is without doubt one of the best British shows in recent years.

Should you wish to watch Inside No. 9, the show is available to stream in the UK on BBC iPlayer. Alternatively (if you don’t live in the UK), Inside No. 9 is available on DVD.
