A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

First up this week is the fantasy drama, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Created by Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin, the series is a prequel to Game of Thrones, as well as an adaptation of the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, and is a much-anticipated series for Game of Thrones fans.

Described as “a journey far from the throne”, the series stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk), alongside Dexter Sol Ansell as his squire, Aegon Targaryen (Egg). The show aims to expand the Game of Thrones universe with a collection of new characters, while bringing the same drama and intrigue we’ve all come to expect.

When the show arrives later this month it will consist of six episodes, which make up the first season. A second season has already been commissioned, and should drop next year.

Should you wish to take a look at this opening year, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is available to stream from January 18th. In the US the show will be available on HBO, while in the UK it’ll appear exclusively on Sky and NOW.

Star Search

Up next is a show which some will be more than familiar with. It’s the TV talent show, Star Search, which is being revived courtesy of Netflix.

The original show was responsible for putting a wealth of talent in front of viewers eyes, with notable names including Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera being given sizeable breaks courtesy of the show. The aim of this new iteration is pretty much the same, with Netflix hoping to tap into a whole new generation of talented performers and give them a big platform to showcase their skills.

Announcing the show, Netflix said: “Star Search is back! The talent is bigger, the stakes are higher, and the format is more interactive than ever.

“Each episode will spotlight the best up-and-coming performers across four categories – music, dance, variety/comedy, kids – as they compete for their shot at stardom.

“With an arced competition structure and weekly eliminations, the series builds dramatic momentum, making every live episode an unmissable event.”

And yep, you read that correctly – episodes will stream live on Netflix! This does of course mean you may have to watch at slightly awkward times if you want to see new episodes as soon as they become available.

Should you wish to watch Star Search, the show begins in the US on Tuesday January 20th and (due to the time difference) on Wednesday January 21st in the UK.

TV Gold…

Dinosaurs

Over to TV Gold now for the classic family sitcom, Dinosaurs. Created by Michael Jacobs and Bob Young, and developed by the legendary Jim Henson, Dinosaurs is an unusual TV show from the early ’90s. It’s unusual because the entire show is fronted by anthropomorphic dinos!

Set in 60,000,000 BC, Dinosaurs primarily focuses on the Sinclair family – an ordinary family comprising of father Earl, mother Fran, grandmother Ethyl, and three kids, Robbie, Charlene, and Baby Sinclair. During the course of the series, the family go about their lives, very much in the same way you or I might, often providing humorous social commentary along the way.

Dinosaurs ran for four seasons between 1991 and 1994, and became a popular show in the process. It clocked up 65 episodes, and probably would have stayed on the air longer had ratings not dropped due to schedule changes and the sheer cost of creating the dinosaurs.

If you missed Dinosaurs the first time around, but are looking for a sitcom to binge, this one could be for you. All the episodes are currently available to stream on Disney+.

Wonder Man

And finally, if you’ve been craving some Marvel action in your life lately then prepare to tuck into a new series which arrives this month. The show is Wonder Man – a series based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.

Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the series centres around Simon Williams, an aspiring actor who auditions for the lead role in an in-universe Wonder Man movie. Ben Kingsley also features in the series, reprising the role of failed actor Trevor Slattery, who also auditions to appear in the film.

Describing the series, Disney said: “Aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams is struggling to get his career off the ground. During a chance meeting with Trevor Slattery, an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak is remaking the superhero film “Wonder Man.”

“These two actors at opposite ends of their careers doggedly pursue life-changing roles in this film as audiences get a peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry.”

Billed as a Marvel mini-series, Wonder Man is eight episodes long and will be available to stream on Disney+ from January 27th.
