In 1962, actress Judi Dench took on the role of Anya in the television movie, The Cherry Orchard. She soon followed this up with a role in the film, The Third Secret, followed by a part in Four in the Morning.

As time rolled on Dench appeared in more films and became a firm favourite with audiences, taking roles in various productions including a run of James Bond movies. She was also made a Dame, essentially transforming her into acting royalty, and popped up in films such as Artemis Fowl and Belfast.

As noted above Dame Judi Dench began her movie career in 1962 with the TV film, The Cherry Orchard. More films followed, including The Third Secret and A Study in Terror, as well as the Shakespeare adaptation, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, where Dench took on the part of Titania.

As the ’60s made way for the ’70s Dench popped up in Luther, Dead Cert, and more Shakespeare with A Performance of Macbeth. For this television movie, Dame Judi Dench played Lady Macbeth.

Sliding into the 1990s and Dame Judi Dench appeared in the beloved romantic comedy, Jack & Sarah, before taking on the part of ‘M’ in the James Bond movie, GoldenEye. Playing opposite Pierce Brosnan, Dench would reprise the role of ‘M’ twice more this decade in Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough.

Other notable films included Mrs Brown, Shakespeare in Love, and Tea with Mussolini.

Moving into the 2000s, and after appearing in The Last of the Blonde Bombshells and Chocolat, Dench played the role of Iris Murdoch in the biographical drama, Iris. This was followed by The Shipping News, as well as her final Bond movie with Pierce Bronsan via 2002’s Die Another Day.

However, this wouldn’t be the final time Dench played ‘M’. When Daniel Craig took over the role of James Bond with a reboot of the series in Casino Royale, Dench remained on board, playing another version of ‘M’ – a part she continued in Craig’s second Bond film, Quantum of Solace.

In addition to the above, Dench provided her voice for some animated pictures, including Disney’s Home on the Range, and The Magic Roundabout spin-off, Doogal. She also voiced the role of Miss Lilly in a series of Angelina Ballerina short children’s movies.
