Slinking its way into cinemas this January is the supernatural horror, Return to Silent Hill. Directed and co-written by Christophe Gans, and based on the Silent Hill video game series, the movie follows the story of James – a young man who is called back to Silent Hill after receiving a mysterious letter.
From here, strange and troubling things happen. The sort of things that fans of the Silent Hill video game series will no doubt want to take a look at.
But when Return to Silent Hill hits cinemas, who will it be suitable for? Movies based on video games tend to attract a teen audience, so will Return to Silent Hill be suitable for the teenagers in your household?
Lets take a look at the rating.

Return to Silent Hill UK age rating

In the UK, Return to Silent Hill has been awarded a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The movie has received this certificate due to “strong horror, gore, (and) language.”
In the UK, a film with a ‘15’ certificate is deemed by the BBFC as being most suitable for audiences aged 15 or over. No one under the age of 15 can attend a ’15’ certificate screening in the UK, not even if they attend with a parent or adult guardian.
As such, the BBFC believe Return to Silent Hill is suitable for some teenagers (i.e. teens aged 15 or over), but not suitable for all teenagers (i.e. those aged 13 or 14 – or anyone below this age).

Return to Silent Hill US age rating

In the US, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has given Return to Silent Hill an ‘R’ rating. The film has received this rating for bloody violent content, language and brief drug use.
In the US, an ‘R’ rated movie can be watched by any one of any age. The only stipulation is that audiences under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
‘R’ rated movies contain some adult material, so the MPAA do advise parents to learn a bit about the movie before taking young children. However, this is only guidance from the MPAA, so it is ultimately up to parents to make the decision.
So, is Return to Silent Hill suitable for a teenager? In the US, that is ultimately up to parents to decide, but teenagers can view the movie in cinemas, so long as those under 17 are accompanied.
