Heading into cinemas this Christmas is the fantasy comedy, Anaconda. Directed by Tom Gormican, and loosely inspired by the 1997 action-horror of the same name, the movie stars Jack Black, Paul Rudd, Steve Zahn, and Thandiwe Newton, and tells the story of two friends who attempt to remake ‘97s Anaconda with troubling results.

Describing the movie, Sony Pictures said: “Doug (Jack Black) and Griff (Paul Rudd) have been best friends since they were kids, and have always dreamed of remaking their all-time favorite movie: the cinematic “classic” Anaconda. When a midlife crisis pushes them to finally go for it, they head deep into the Amazon to start filming.

“But things get real when an actual giant anaconda appears, turning their comically chaotic movie set into a deadly situation. The movie they’re dying to make? It might just get them killed.”

Pitched as a comedy, and released on Christmas Day in the US and Boxing Day in the UK, Anaconda is hoping to clean up at the box office during the holidays. The film is also hoping to attract the attention of those looking for some escapism from the standard Christmas fare.

But when Anaconda hits cinema screens will it be suitable for all ages, including families? Let’s take a look at the age rating to find out.

Anaconda UK age rating

In the UK, Anaconda has been awarded a ‘12A’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The movie has received this certificate due to “moderate violence, threat, drug misuse, (and) infrequent strong language.”

In the UK, a film with a ‘12A’ certificate is deemed by the BBFC as being most suitable for audiences aged 12 or over. However, audiences under the age of 12 can watch a ‘12A’ in cinemas, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

While the BBFC believe the film is most suitable for those aged 12 and above, the organisation recognises some audiences below this age will be OK with the movie. If parents believe their children would be fine watching the movie, then as long as they are accompanied they can watch the film.

As to the question above about family viewing, if all of the family members are aged 12 or above, then yes Anaconda is suitable for family viewing. If any members of the family are below the age of 12, they can watch the movie (accompanied), it is purely up to parental discretion.

Anaconda US age rating

In the US, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has given Anaconda a ‘PG-13’ rating. The film has received this rating for violence/action, strong language, some drug use and suggestive references.

In the US, a ‘PG-13’ rated movie can be watched by any one of any age. However, the MPAA believe some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13, so parents are advised to learn more about the film before their youngest children watch it.

As for family viewing, the MPAA believe this comes down to parental discretion. If parents believe their children will be fine with the movie, and they are aware of the content (violence, language, etc), then families can see this movie in theatres.
