In 2009, children’s book The Gruffalo was adapted for television. The book – written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler – was transformed into a short, animated film which aired on BBC One in the UK on Christmas Day.
Due to the popularity of The Gruffalo, which was a ratings winner for the BBC, further Donaldson/Scheffler stories were adapted for television, including Room on the Broom, The Highway Rat, and The Scarecrow’s Wedding, amongst others. The Gruffalo also received a sequel in the shape of 2011’s The Gruffalo’s Child, which also proved to be a hit.
