In December 1964, the stop-motion Christmas animated television special, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer aired on NBC. Written by Romeo Muller and based on the song of the same name by Johnny Marks, the special featured narration by Burl Ives and focused on the story of the titular reindeer.
Upon making its debut, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer proved popular with audiences and quickly became a festive favourite, aired year after year. It also kick-started a series of other Christmas-themed specials, produced by Rankin/Bass.
