Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994)

Kenneth Branagh directs and stars in this ’90s Gothic horror based on Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Branagh plays the titular Frankenstein, while Robert De Niro takes on the role of the monster. (123 mins)

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

Director Francis Ford Coppola tackles Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Dracula, in this lavish and eye-catching Gothic production from the early ’90s. Gary Oldman plays the lead role of Dracula/Vlad the Impaler, while the supporting cast includes Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Richard E. Grant, and Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. (128 mins)

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Yet another Gothic horror, and a marvellous one based on Washington Irving’s 1820 short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Tim Burton directs; Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, and Christopher Lee star; while the story focuses on an investigation into a series of brutal decapitations taking place in a small village. The Pale Blue Eye (2022)

And finally, Scott Cooper directs this Gothic mystery-thriller about a detective who teams up with Edgar Allan Poe to investigate a series of murders at a military academy. Christian Bale, Harry Melling, and Gillian Anderson star in The Pale Blue Eye. (130 mins)
