In 1963, actor Dick Van Dyke made his film debut in George Sidney’s musical comedy, Bye Bye Birdie. From here he appeared in What a Way to Go!, before starring in the beloved Disney movie, Mary Poppins.
As the years flew by, Van Dyke continued to appear on film, and alongside his extensive TV work, he built up a sizeable fanbase. A fanbase which followed him decade by decade through different stories, different genres, and different performances.

1960s

As noted above, Dick Van Dyke first appeared on film playing the role of Albert F. Peterson in musical comedy, Bye Bye Birdie. The actor appeared alongside a cast which included Janet Leigh, Ann-Margret, Paul Lynde, Ed Sullivan, and Maureen Stapleton.
From here, Van Dyke starred in What a Way to Go! with Shirley MacLaine, Paul Newman, Gene Kelly, and Dean Martin, before taking on the iconic role of Bert (as well as the not-as-iconic role of Mr. Dawes Senior) in the fantastic Mary Poppins opposite Julie Andrews.
Other movies during this decade included Divorce American Style and Fitzwilly Stikes Back, as well as another popular movie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Taking on the part of Caractacus Potts, Van Dyke starred alongside Sally Ann Howes in what would become one of his signature films.
