“Dangerously close to human” reads the tagline for Johannes Roberts’ survival horror, Primate. Roberts is director and co-writer on the new movie (co-written with Ernest Riera), and if you like unsettling pictures or creature features, then this one could be for you.
It’s certainly unsettling if you happen to have watched the initial teaser trailer for the new movie (below), which revolves around a distressing 911 call. In the teaser, an emergency operator takes a call from a terrified woman who begs for the operator to send the police.
During the call she utters the line “please, he’s gonna kill me.” Although the woman doesn’t reveal who “he” is, background noises reveal “he” isn’t human.
In fact, “he” is a chimp. And a rabid one at that, named Ben.
Released in 2026 by Paramount Pictures, the premise of Primate is as follows: “A group of friends’ tropical vacation turns into a terrifying, primal tale of horror and survival.” That primal horror is at the heart of Primate, which involves a family pet who turns nasty.
As noted above, the pet is a chimp named Ben. He gets bitten, loses control, and murder and mayhem follow – as seen in the full-length trailer (below) which expands upon the premise.
And if the early buzz is any indication, this could be one for those after a good horror to sink their teeth into. Primate made its debut at Fantastic Fest back in September, and the initial response was very encouraging.
Want to take a look? Well, you don’t have too long to wait.
Primate will be arriving in cinemas on January 9th 2026. So, if you want to kick-start the new year with something sinister, you know what to do.
