This October, horror sequel Black Phone 2 arrives in cinemas. The film – a follow-up to 2021’s The Black Phone – continues the story of Finney, the only known survivor of the sinister Grabber!
Describing the new movie, Universal Pictures said: “Four years ago, 13-year-old Finn killed his abductor and escaped, becoming the sole survivor of The Grabber. But true evil transcends death and the phone is ringing again.
“Four-time Academy Award® nominee Ethan Hawke returns to the most sinister role of his career as The Grabber seeks vengeance on Finn (Mason Thames) from beyond the grave by menacing Finn’s younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw).
“As Finn, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity, the headstrong 15-year-old Gwen begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake.
“Determined to solve the mystery and end the torment for both her and her brother, Gwen persuades Finn to visit the camp during a winter storm. There, she uncovers a shattering intersection between The Grabber and her own family’s history. Together, she and Finn must confront a killer who has grown more powerful in death and more significant to them than either could imagine.”
Timed to debut before Halloween, Black Phone 2 is expected to do big business when it hits cinema screens. The original film was both a critical and commercial success, and Universal Pictures are hoping for more of the same with this sequel, with audiences lining up to check it out.
One demographic who are likely to have their focus on the movie’s arrival are teen horror fans. Horror tends to attract the attention of teenagers, and with the Black Phone 2’s core characters being teens, this film is sure to attract younger eyes.
But when Black Phone 2 hits cinemas this month is it actually suitable for a teen audience? Put simply: Should the teenagers in your household wish to watch the film at the cinema, perhaps with their friends, will they be able to?
Let’s take a look at the all-important rating for Black Phone 2 to find out.

Black Phone 2 US age rating

In the US, Black Phone 2 has received an ‘R’ rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The movie has received this rating due to strong violent content, gore, drug use, and language.
In the US, any one of any age can watch an ‘R’ rated movie at the cinema – including teens. The only rule is that audiences under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guard.
As such, if you have a teen in your household and they wish to view Black Phone 2 at the cinema, they will require adult accompaniment. However, so long as an adult is in attendance, they are fine to watch Black Phone 2.
Does this mean Black Phone 2 is suitable for teen audiences? Well, as far as the MPAA is concerned, that’s up to parents to decide.
The MPAA offer guidance – nothing more. The organisation advises parents to learn more about the film before taking their children with them.
Still not sure? Then it is worth taking a look at the UK rating information below, where things are somewhat different.

Black Phone 2 UK age rating

In the UK, Black Phone 2 has been awarded an ‘18’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The movie has received this rating due to “strong bloody violence.”
In the UK, an ‘18’ certificate film is deemed suitable for audiences aged 18 or over only. No one under the age of 18 can watch an ‘18’ certificate movie in a UK cinema.
It doesn’t matter if a parent or adult guardian is in attendance, this is strictly 18s or over. The BBFC believe this is who the film is suitable for, so no one below this age is permitted to watch the film in a UK cinema.
So, is Black Phone 2 suitable for a teen? Not according to the BBFC (unless the teen is 18 or 19).
