October is officially ‘Halloween month’. No matter what day of October you land on, it’s all about Halloween, and it’s all about horror.

And one movie hoping to catch audiences’ attention this October is the supernatural mystery-horror Shelby Oaks. Written and directed by Chris Stuckmann, the movie stars Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, and Keith David, and focuses on a woman searching for her missing sister in a seemingly abandoned town.

When Shelby Oaks lands in cinemas, it is expected to do well. Early buzz from the festival circuit is positive, and with Halloween just a stone’s throw away, this one will stir up a great deal of interest.

Shelby Oaks is also likely to catch the eye of the teenage crowd. Teens love horror – especially around Halloween – and Shelby Oaks will no doubt fall on the radar of young horror fans.

But is Shelby Oaks suitable for a teenager? Let’s say you’ve got a 14-year-old horror fan in your house, who is very keen to watch this movie, can they actually go see Shelby Oaks?

Let’s take a look at the age rating.

In the UK, Shelby Oaks has been awarded a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The movie has received this rating due to “strong injury detail, violence, suicide, horror, (and) sexual violence references.”

In the UK, a ‘15’ certificate film is suitable for audiences aged 15 or over. Anyone under the age of 15 cannot watch a ‘15’ certificate movie in a UK cinema.

As such, Shelby Oaks is not suitable for teens below this age, such as 13 or 14-year-olds. If you’re not 15 or above, you simply can’t watch this film at the cinema.

In the US, Shelby Oaks has been granted an ‘R’ rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The movie has received this rating for violent content, gore, suicide, and language.

In the US, any one can watch an ‘R’ rated movie at the cinema. You can be 13 or 32 – you will be admitted into a screening.

The only rule is that audiences under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. So, if you have teens in your house aged 14 and they are desperate to watch Shelby Oaks, they can, so long as they attend a screening with an adult.

When it comes to the MPAA and ‘R’ rated movies, the organisation believes audiences should make up their own minds about what they watch, using the information supplied. In short: If you think Shelby Oaks is suitable/unsuitable for your teen, make your own decision accordingly.
