“I want you to feel safe here”. Have seven simple words ever sounded more sinister?

Well, these words are uttered by Nina Winchester – one of the lead characters in forthcoming psychological thriller, The Housemaid. The movie is heading to cinema screens this December, and if the trailer is anything to go by, it looks set to be a very chilling affair.

Based on the 2022 novel of the same name by Freida McFadden, the movie follows the story of Millie Calloway – a young woman with a troubled past. During the course of the film, Millie becomes the live-in housemaid for the wealthy Winchester family, where her duties include cleaning, organising, and light cooking.

However, there’s something not quite right in the Winchester household. And soon, Millie discovers dark secrets lurking under the surface.

Describing the movie, Lionsgate said: “The Housemaid is a wildly entertaining thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, based on the best-selling book. From director Paul Feig, the film plunges audiences into a twisted world where perfection is an illusion, and nothing is as it seems.

“Trying to escape her past, Millie (Sweeney) accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). But what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous – a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power. Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.”

Joining Sweeney, Seyfried, and Sklenar on the picture are a cast which includes Michele Morrone, Mark Grossman, Hannah Cruz, Indiana Elle, and Elizabeth Perkins. Sweeney and Seyfried are also on board as executive producers.

Filming on the new movie ran between January and March 2025, with principal photography taking place in New Jersey. Theodore Shapiro (The Roses, The Eyes of Tammy Faye) is scoring the movie, while Rebecca Sonnenshine wrote the screenplay.

Should you wish to take a look at The Housemaid, to discover how safe things really are at the Winchester household, you won’t have to wait too long. The movie hits cinema screens on December 19th.
