In October, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson returns to the big screen for the highly anticipated biographical sports drama, The Smashing Machine. Written and directed by Benny Safdie, the movie is a significant change in direction for Johnson, who will be flexing his acting chops to play former amateur wrestler and mixed martial arts fighter, Mark Kerr.

To date, Johnson has starred in a run of high-profile family-friendly films, which have been big box-office hits, but so far he hasn’t quite achieved critical acclaim for his performances. Johnson is hoping The Smashing Machine will change all that, as this is a more high-brow affair, that should allow audiences to see him in a different light.

The early buzz surrounding The Smashing Machine has been very encouraging. The film has been working its way around the festival circuit and the response so far has been good.

But when The Smashing Machine finally opens in cinemas, who is it aimed at? Put simply: What is the age rating?

Let’s take a look.

In the UK, The Smashing Machine has been awarded a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The movie has received this rating due to “strong language, violence, (and) abusive behaviour.”

In the UK, a ‘15’ certificate film is deemed suitable for audiences aged 15 or over. Anyone under the age of 15 cannot watch a ‘15’ certificate movie in a UK cinema.

As such, The Smashing Machine has been deemed most suitable for mid-teens and above. The BBFC don’t believe the film is suitable for those below this age.

In the US, The Smashing Machine has received an ‘R’ rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The movie has received this rating for language and some drug use.

In the US, any one of any age can watch an ‘R’ rated movie at the cinema. The only rule is that audiences under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guard.

However, based on this rating, The Smashing Machine is deemed most suitable for audiences who are late teens or above.
