What is the age rating of The Threesome (2025)?

This month The Threesome is playing in cinemas. Directed by Chad Hartigan, the movie stars Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King, and Ruby Cruz, and follows the story of three people – Olivia, Jenny, and Connor – who embark on a threesome.

Pitched as a romantic comedy drama, the film is one which catches the attention due to its title. The film makes it fairly clear what the backdrop of the story is, giving audiences an understanding of some of the themes before they watch the film.

But based on this title, you might be wondering what the age rating of The Threesome is? Is this a sexually charged rom-com for adults only, or perhaps something a little tamer?

The Threesome (2025) US rating

In the US, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has given The Threesome an ‘R’ rating. The film has received this rating for strong sexuality and sex-related dialogue.

In the US, an ‘R’ rating stands for ‘restricted’. This means there is some restriction on who can view an ‘R’ rated movie, although that restriction isn’t as restrictive as it suggests.

Anyone of any age can watch an ‘R’ rated movie in a US cinema. The only stipulation is that audiences under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

As such, The Threesome could be watched by anyone, but the MPAA believe it is most suitable for late teens onward.

The Threesome (2025) UK rating

In the UK, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has given The Threesome a ’15’ certificate. The movie has received this rating due to “strong language, sex references, (and) brief drug misuse.”

When it comes to sex references, the BBFC notes “visual and verbal references are made to threesomes, ejaculation, genitals, masturbation and other forms of sexual activity.” Meanwhile, in terms of language, there is a mix of strong language and milder terms.

In the UK, a ’15’ certificate is deemed suitable for audiences aged 15 or over. As such, no one under the age of 15 is permitted to watch The Threesome in a UK cinema.
