This September, the latest (and possibly the last) entry in the Conjuring Universe, The Conjuring: Last Rites, arrives in cinemas. The movie from director Michael Chaves stars Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy, and promises to be the most shocking instalment to date!

Promoting the film, New Line/Warner Bros. said: “The Conjuring: Last Rites delivers another thrilling chapter of the iconic Conjuring cinematic universe, based on real events. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reunite for one last case as renowned, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a powerful and spine-chilling addition to the global box office-breaking franchise.”

With The Conjuring movie series proving to be a huge hit for Warner Bros./New Line Cinema, current predictions suggest this new offering will be a financial success too. With the film debuting in the run-up to Halloween, there will certainly be a great deal of interest in this entry, especially from young horror fans.

But is The Conjuring: Last Rites suitable for young audiences? And is this a movie a teenager can watch at the cinema?

Let’s take a look at the age rating for the movie.

The Conjuring: Last Rites UK rating

In the UK, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has awarded The Conjuring: Last Rites a ’15’ certificate. The movie has received this certificate due to “strong horror, violence, (and) injury detail”.

In the UK, a ’15’ certificate film is deemed suitable for audiences aged 15 or over. As such, no one below the age of 15 will be permitted to watch this movie in a UK cinema.

Based on this information, the BBFC do not believe this film is suitable for all ages, and certainly not suitable for all teens. When it comes to teenage horror fans, those below the age of 15 won’t be able to view this movie on the big screen, and will need to catch it at a later date.

It’s worth noting, this ’15’ certificate puts The Conjuring: Last Rites in line with almost all the other entries in the series (with the exception of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It). So, if you’re a parent and you are trying to understand why this movie has received a ’15’ certificate, it might be advisable to take a look at past entries to get a flavour for the overall tone and content of the series.

The Conjuring: Last Rites US rating

Over to the US, and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has granted The Conjuring: Last Rites an ‘R’ rating. The movie has received this rating for bloody and violent content, as well as terror.

In the US, audience members of any age can view an ‘R’ rated movie at the cinema. The only rule is that audiences under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

So, if you have a teen horror fan in your house and they can’t wait to watch The Conjuring: Last Rites as soon as it is released at the cinema, they are allowed to watch the movie. If they are under 17 they will simply need someone to go with them, so do keep this in mind (you may have to attend, even if The Conjuring films aren’t your thing).

Either way, the MPAA does suggest parents familiarise themselves with the movie, including the type of film it is (i.e. a supernatural horror) before setting off and buying popcorn. However, the decision to let your teen watch the film is entirely in your hands.
