This October, erotic horror-thriller, Bone Lake is set to make its cinematic debut. Directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan, and starring Maddie Hasson, Marco Pigossi, and Alex Roe, the movie follows the story of Sage and Diego, whose romantic getaway to the titular Bone Lake takes an unexpected turn.

In the movie, the couple are forced to share a mansion with the mysterious Will and Cin. As tension mounts, long-buried secrets begin to surface.

Having received its world premiere at Fantastic Fest back in 2024, the early buzz on Bone Lake has been positive. With the release date set to coincide with the run-up to Halloween, the movie is also expected to be popular.

And with this being a horror movie, Bone Lake is certain to catch the attention of young horror fans. Perhaps most specifically teenage horror fans.

But when Bone Lake arrives in cinemas, will it be suitable for a teen audience? Let’s take a look at the age rating to find out.

Bone Lake UK age rating

In the UK, Bone Lake has been awarded an ’18’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification. The movie has received this rating due to “strong bloody violence, sex (and) nudity.”

According to the BBFC, when it comes to the violence “people are stabbed, impaled and attacked with weapons including axes, knives and glass. A woman purposely causes a car crash (and) there are prolonged scenes in which people are stalked and chased with weapons.”

In terms of the sexual content, there are several sex scenes. The BBFC said: “One sex scene features BDSM, including spanking and bondage.”

In the UK, a movie which has been awarded an ’18’ certificate is deemed suitable for audiences aged 18 or over only. No one under the age of 18 will be permitted to watch the movie in a UK cinema.

Based on the ’18’ certificate, as well as the content advice provided by the BBFC, the organisation believes Bone Lake is not suitable for teenagers. Unless of course, those teenagers are aged 18 or 19.

Bone Lake US age rating

Over in the US the MPAA has given Bone Lake an ‘R’ rating. The movie has received this rating due to strong bloody violence, grisly images, sexual content, graphic nudity, language, and some drug use.

In the US things are significantly different, as anyone can watch an ‘R’ rated movie, the only stipulation is any audience member under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. The MPAA also advise parents to learn more about the film before taking young children to a screening

When it comes to ‘R’ rated movies, films with this rating contain some adult material, so the MPAA ask parents to consider the suitability of the film if children are in attendance. However, this isn’t law, just guidance.

Based on the ‘R’ rating, the MPAA believe it is up to parents to decide if Bone Lake is suitable for teens. Essentially the decision is handed over to parents, and they are asked to make their decision based on the information provided.
