All’s fair in love and war. Or at least it is according to the tagline of new black comedy, The Roses.
The movie – a remake of 1989’s The War of the Roses, which in turn was based on the novel of the same name by Warren Adler – stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, and Kate McKinnon, and focuses on a once happy couple encountering a turbulent time.
Describing the movie, SearchLight Pictures said: “Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.”
With Cumberbatch and Colman leading the cast, The Roses is set to be a notable picture for late-summer. As such, it could attract interest from an audience of all ages, but is this an all-ages movies?
Put more simply: Is The Roses suitable for family viewing? Let’s take a look at the age rating to find out.

The Roses UK age rating

Let’s start with the UK, where The Roses has been given a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has received this rating due to “very strong language, strong sex references, threat (and) drug misuse.”
In the UK, a movie with a ‘15’ certificate is deemed suitable for audiences aged 15 years old or over. If the BBFC award a ‘15’ certificate to a movie, then audiences must be this age or above to view the film in UK cinemas.
Based on this certificate, the BBFC don’t believe The Roses is suitable for all ages, so not necessarily family viewing. However, if the family members are over the age of 15 there is no problem at all.

The Roses US age rating

Over to the US now, where the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has awarded The Roses an ‘R’ rating. The Roses has received this rating for language, sexual content, and drug content.
In the US anyone can watch an ‘R’ rated movie, the only stipulation is audience members under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. The MPAA also advise parents to learn more about the film before taking young children to a screening
When it comes to ‘R’ rated movies, films with this rating contain some adult material, so the general recommendation from the MPAA is to consider the suitability of the film for the intended audience. However, this is not law, just guidance, so it is up to your own discretion.
So ultimately it is up to you to decide if The Roses is suitable for your family. Take the information provided, consider the rating, and go from there.
