In 2009, Avatar made its way into cinemas. The sci-fi action film, written and directed by James Cameron, followed the story of an alien race known as the Na’vi, who find their peaceful way of life under threat from humans, during a mission to colonise their planet, Pandora.

Upon making its debut, Avatar was a phenomenal hit with audiences, quickly becoming the highest grossing movie of all-time. The film’s success made it clear that audiences were keen to see more from the world of Avatar, and director James Cameron got to work on a collection of sequels (dedicating years to this series).

Avatar (2009)

The first entry in the Avatar movie series debuted in 2009. In this film, the year is 2154 and with Earth on the brink of ecological collapse the Resources Development Administration (RDA) mines the moon of Pandora for a valuable mineral known as unobtanium.

Pandora is inhabited by the 10-foot-tall Na’vi – a blue-skinned race of humanoids. In order to explore Pandora, the RDA – including former marine, Jake Sully – infiltrate a Na’vi tribe, disguising themselves as fellow Na’vi by using avatars. (162 mins)

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Picking up the story in Avatar: The Way of Water, 16 years have passed and Jake Sully is now chief of the Omatikaya clan, having helped rid Pandora of the RDA’s presence. Within this time he has raised his family alongside his partner, Neytiri, but trouble begins to brew once more when the RDA return to Pandora. (192 mins)

Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)

Jake Sully’s story continues in this third instalment, Avatar: Fire and Ash. Sully and his family have left the Omatikaya clan and have joined the Matkayina clan.
