Think you’ve watched every iteration of Batman possible? Well, make room for one more.
This month sees the arrival of Aztect Batman – the latest take on the Caped Crusader. The character leads the new animated movie, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires (aka Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios), which is a joint collaboration between the Mexican animation studio, Ánima Estudios, and Warner Bros. Animation.
Written and directed by Juan Meza-León, and produced by José C. García de Letona and Fernando De Fuentes, the movie focuses on Yohualli Coatl – a privileged boy who is a member of the priesthood of the Aztecs. However, Coatl’s life changes when his father is murdered by the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, prompting him to take on the alter-ego of Batman.

Horacio García Rojas is voicing Yohualli Coatl/Batman, while Omar Chaparro takes on the role of Joker. In the movie, the Clown Prince of Crime is a former priest who engages in human sacrifices, causing him to lose his sanity.
Meanwhile, Álvaro Morte voices Hernán Cortés, aka this universe’s Two-Face. In keeping with the distinctive look of Two-Face, Cortés is marked by an injry which leaves half his face disfigured.

Production work began on Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires back in 2022, as the first collaboration between Ánima Estudios, and Warner Bros. Animation. The film has been entirely produced in Mexico, and made specifically to stream on Max in the US, as well as Max Latin America.
If you live in the UK, you’ll be pleased to know the movie is heading this way too. The British Board of Film Classification has recently granted the film a ’15’ certificate (for strong violence and bloody images) ahead of its UK release.
So, prepare yourself for yet more Batman. The Batman animated movies continue to expand, and this looks set to be another imaginative new entry.
