Hold onto your mops, The Toxic Avenger movie series is back, and the series’ hideously deformed poster-boy, Toxie is returning too, via a new big screen outing! The Toxic Avenger will land in cinemas this summer, where it hopes to bring some much-needed splatter to the standard super heroics we’ve been accustomed to as of late.
Yes, you read that correctly, The Toxic Avenger will be playing in cinemas. The long-awaited movie stars Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, and Elijah Wood, and it will be debuting this August, bridging the gap between the summer blockbuster season and the spooky season.
If you’ve checked out the trailer for the new movie, or you know anything about The Toxic Avenger movies of the past, you’ll know they are not your average super hero flick. Despite the word ‘Avenger’ in the title, this film has nothing to do with Iron Man and the Hulk, so don’t be confused.
In fact, just to avoid any further confusion, it might be wise to find out a little bit more about the film before rushing off to see this one at the cinema. The Toxic Avenger is NOT a Marvel movie, and this means its suitability for certain audiences is a little different.
This could be especially important if you have teenagers in the house who are intrigued by The Toxic Avenger. They might be eager to go and see this new film, but is the film one they should be taking a look at or not?
Let’s dive into the age rating.

The Toxic Avenger UK age rating

In the UK, The Toxic Avenger has been awarded an ’18’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has received this certificate for “strong gory violence, (and) injury detail.”
Movies rated ’18’ in the UK are deemed suitable for audiences aged 18 or over. No one under the age of 18 is permitted to watch an ’18’ certificate film in the cinema.
As such, unless you’re 18- or 19-years-old (which are still teenage years) this film is not suitable for the majority of teenagers. If you have a teen in your household, who is 15, 16, 17, etc, they will not be able to watch this movie at the cinema – it’s adults only!

The Toxic Avenger US age rating

In the US, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has given The Toxic Avenger an ‘R’ rating. An ‘R’ rating means restricted.
Audiences of any age can watch an ‘R’ rated movie in US cinemas, but those under the age of 17 require an adult. ‘R’ rated movies contain some adult material, and parents are urged to learn more about the film, before taking their children with them to the cinema.

However, it would seem as if the distributors, Cineverse and Iconic Events Releasing, are keen to suggest the film is being released ‘unrated’, possibly as part of the marketing drive. An ‘unrated’ movie can help a movie gain a certain level of notoriety, which in turn brings audiences into cinemas, and can make it more appealing than an ‘R’ rated film.
Some of the jovial marketing around this unrated ‘rating’ (see above) suggests “absolutely no one under 18 (is) permitted. Don’t even try to get in.” The reason for this is due to “ultra violent/toxic content, p*ss play, mutant nudity, hilarious harm and gnarly theatre fun.”
So, based on this information, audiences are advised and/or reminded, that The Toxic Avenger is not your standard movie. This is a film which contains material which will not sit well with everyone, so if you have young teens in your household, approach with some caution.
