If your lightcycle needs some juice, you should power it up ASAP. Disney has a new movie arriving later this year and if you want to catch this one on the big screen, you’ll want a sweet ride to the cinema.
The film is the sci-fi fantasy epic, TRON: Ares. The new movie is the highly-anticipated third installment in the fan-favourite TRON franchise.
TRON: Ares is a follow-up to Disney’s groundbreaking 1982 science fiction film TRON, as well as its 2010 sequel, TRON: Legacy (aka the one with the kick-ass Daft Punk soundtrack). Introducing new characters and a new story, the film is getting ready to expand the TRON universe in exciting and imaginative ways, with a tale about an A.I. program.
Describing the movie, Disney said: “TRON: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.”
Production began on TRON: Ares back in January 2024, and completed in May the same year under the watchful eye of director Joachim Rønning. Rønning is no stranger to big Disney productions, or the fantasy genre, having previously helmed 2019’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
Commenting on his involvement in the forthcoming picture, Rønning said: “I’m excited to be part of the TRON franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world.
He added: “TRON: Ares builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”

With TRON: Ares, Rønning is working from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow, which in turn is based on a story written by Wigutow and David Digilio. As for his cast, the director has enlisted some high-profile names to flesh out the universe.
Chief amongst the acting talent is Jared Leto, who takes on the role of the titular Ares. Leto will be front-and-centre of this movie and has been attached to the project since 2017.
Joining him on screen are Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and the ever-brilliant former X-Files star, Gillian Anderson. Meanwhile, franchise fave, Jeff Bridges returns, having previously appeared in both TRON and TRON: Legacy, which should add some continuity and connective tissue to this entry.

Back behind the scenes and Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Emma Ludbrook, Steven Lisberger, and the aforementioned Leto are the producers of TRON: Ares, while Russell Allen is executive producer. As for the music, well, with the previous film boasting the currently defunct Daft Punk, another top talent was needed for this new film and Rønning found it with Nine Inch Nails.
Band members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were approached to score TRON: Ares shortly after completing work on the superb Disney-Pixar movie, Soul (2020). Reznor and Ross (along with musician Jon Batiste) won an Oscar for that animated feature, so Disney are no doubt hoping they can work their magic again with TRON.

With all the cast and crew assembled, and all the digital wizardry being put in place, it won’t be long before we see the finished results. In fact, it’ll be no time at all.
TRON: Ares arrives in cinemas on October 10th. If your lightcycle does need a charge, get it sorted now, as October will be here before you know it.
