After twelve years, countless scares, and nine movies (ten if we include The Curse of La Llorona), The Conjuring Universe is preparing for the end. The next entry is supposedly the final instalment in the hugely profitable series and will arrive under the rather ominous title, The Conjuring: Last Rites.

Will this actually be the last hurrah for this horror universe? That remains to be seen.

New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. have made over $2 billion from The Conjuring universe, so they may not be so quick to bury this profitable series. Either way, if this is the final fling, then expect things to go out with a bang – certainly for franchise stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson.

According to New Line/Warner Bros., “The Conjuring: Last Rites delivers another thrilling chapter of the iconic Conjuring cinematic universe, based on real events.

“Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reunite for one last case as renowned, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a powerful and spine-chilling addition to the global box office-breaking franchise.”

Through sequels, spin-offs, and franchise expansions Farmiga and Wilson have been the backbone of the series. Even when the pair have been absent from films within The Conjuring Universe, their overall involvement has been the glue that keeps everything together.

So with this being the end of the road for Farmiga and Wilson, and therefore Ed and Lorraine Warren, fans may wonder if the characters will finally fall foul of a supernatural adversary. Surely they can only escape so much evil before they succumb to it all?

Maybe. But no one at New Line/Warner Bros. is saying.

However, if they are going out, they are doing it under the watchful eye of franchise veteran Michael Chaves. Chaves has previously directed The Curse of La Llorona (2019), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), and The Nun II (2023), and returns to helm Last Rites, working alongside producers and franchise architects James Wan and Peter Safran.

Chaves directs from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, which is based on a story by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick & James Wan. Johnson-McGoldrick is also on board the film as an executive producer, alongside Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Natalia Safran, John Rickard, and Hans Ritter.

Meanwhile, the music for The Conjuring: The Last Rites is composed by Benjamin Wallfisch. Wallfisch previously provided the music for Annabelle: Creation (2017), and is no stranger to horror having composed the scores for Lights Out (2016), A Cure for Wellness (2016), It (2017), It Chapter Two (2019), The Invisible Man (2020), Alien: Romulus (2024), Wolf Man (2025), and Until Dawn (2025).

As for the cast, Farmiga and Wilson will be joined by Mia Tomlinson in the role of Ed and Lorraine’s daughter, Judy Warren, while Ben Hardy takes on the part of Judy’s boyfriend, Tony Spera. Meanwhile, Steve Coulter reprises the role of Father Gordon, a part he has played at various points throughout the series, beginning with 2013’s The Conjuring.

The remaining cast members include Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon, John Brotherton and Shannon Kook.

If you’re not quite up-to-date on the comings and goings of the Warrens, or you’re a little behind on the rest of The Conjuring Universe, you have time to catch up before this final instalment (probably not final) drops. But… be quick.

The Conjuring: Last Rites will begin screening internationally from September 3rd. The film arrives in the US from September 5th.

You may wish to dress in black for the occasion, just in case the Warrens don’t make it out in one piece.
