Look, up on the big screen! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the latest comic book movie and this one stars Superman!
Yes, there’s another Superman movie swooping into cinemas this summer. The film – directed by James Gunn – stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, and sees the Man of Steel pitted against his archenemy, Lex Luthor.
But you probably already know this, as Superman is being heavily promoted as one of the big films of 2025. There are posters and merchandise tie-ins everywhere, and the preview trailers have been playing for a while.
Heck, the little Superman fans in your household have also probably spent the past few weeks bugging you to see the movie. They already have the action figures and the Superman costume, they now want to see the film!
But wait, is this going to be a simple thing of taking them to the cinema to watch Superman, or is this going to be a comic book movie they have to watch at home because it’s a bit too ‘adult’? After all, not all comic book movies are suitable for young audiences, 2022’s The Batman was quite a dark movie, so is Superman going to be one of these movies too?
Well, let’s take a look at the age ratings and everything should become clear.
__
Superman (2025) UK age rating

OK, so if you live in the UK, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has granted Superman a ‘12A’ rating for “moderate violence, threat, injury detail, (and) language.” In the UK, a movie with a ‘12A’ certificate is regarded as suitable for audiences aged 12 or over, as it can contain material which may be a little strong for very young children.
However, kids under the age of 12 can watch a ‘12A’ in UK cinemas, so long as they are accompanied by an adult. This means if you are a parent to a seven-year-old who simply can’t wait to watch Superman this summer, then you are fine to take them to watch the film, they just need an adult or guardian with them during the screening.
And if you’re still a bit unsure about the suitability, or whether your child will sit through a ‘12A’ it might be handy to know that many comic book movies tend to be ‘12A’s. If your child watches the majority of the Marvel movies or the Jurassic World films, these tend to be ‘12A’ certificate films when they play in cinemas, so if they can handle these, they should be fine with Superman.

Superman (2025) US age rating

Meanwhile, over in the US, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has awarded Superman a ‘PG-13’ rating. The film has received this rating for violence, action and language.
When it comes to ‘PG-13’ movies, the MPAA state “some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.” As such the association suggests parents should be cautious.
However, this is purely advice and nothing more. In the US, any one of any age can watch a ‘PG-13’ rated movie at the cinema, so there are no restrictions and no accompanying adults required.
Most comic book movies tend to get the ‘PG-13’ rating in the US. So, if your child can watch the vast majority of superhero movies then they can watch Superman in the cinema – no problem!
This just leaves you to buy the tickets, and give them some pocket money for popcorn. Hey, you want them to have a super time, don’t you?
