Well here’s some interesting news for all those who have been waiting patiently for information regarding the forthcoming Red Sonja movie. The film has finally been given a rating by the British Board of Film Classification.
This means a.) the fairly secretive, never-thought-we’d-see-it movie is complete, and b.) it should arrive very soon. Considering Red Sonja entered production way back in 2022, and all news on the project has been somewhat elusive, this BBFC rating is a good sign.

Directed by M.J. Bassett, the action-fantasy film stars Matilda Lutz, Rhona Mitra, Robert Sheehan, and Robert Rhodes. Based on a character created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith (which in turn was inspired by Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonya of Rogatino), this new Red Sonja movie will be the second to feature the heroine, following an underwhelming 1985 offering starring Brigitte Nielsen.
The plot description for Red Sonja 2025 (via the BBFC) reads: “A fierce female warrior seeks vengeance after her village and people are destroyed by a brutal army in this fantasy action drama.” As for the rating, the BBFC has awarded Red Sonja a ‘15’ certificate, meaning it is suitable for audiences aged 15 or over.
The BBFC has awarded Red Sonja this certificate due to “strong bloody violence, (and) injury detail.” The organisation said:
“There are sustained sequences of strong violence, such as stabbings and knife slashings which feature blood spurts and bloody aftermath detail.”
You should also expect a decapitation and some mutilation (well, this is a sword-and-sorcery film). The bad language is moderate.
There’s still no official release date for Red Sonja, but now the film has a BBFC rating it should drop shortly. And when it does, it will take up approximately 111 minutes of your time, should you decide to watch it.
**Update** Red Sonja is to be released on August 15th.
