This summer, the Jurassic World movie series returns to cinema screens with a new entry: Jurassic World: Rebirth. The film – directed by Gareth Edwards – stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Rupert Friend, and focuses on a team of specialists who are sent on a mission to extract samples from mutant dinos!

Now, if you’ve caught any of the preview trailers or advertisements for Jurassic World: Rebirth, you’ll be aware the dinos look particularly creepy in this new film. This movie is looking to take the Jurassicfranchise in a new direction, while still serving up a few good old fashioned scares, and this includes introducing a whole new monstrous dinosaur known as the Distortus rex!

And of course, who doesn’t love a scary new dino? Especially young audiences, who are always keen to see a toothy dinosaur (or two) snarling and chomping on the big screen.

But before you book tickets and head off to watch Jurassic World: Rebirth, you may be asking the all-important questions: Is this film suitable for young audiences and will my eight-year-old be able to watch Jurassic World: Rebirth at the cinema?

After all, young audiences love the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World movies, and that means plenty of youngsters and their friends will be itching to see the new movie. Even more so because the film is released in July, during the summer season when everyone is going to the flicks!

Well, let’s take a look at the ratings and everything should become clear.

If you live in the US, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has awarded Jurassic World: Rebirth a ‘PG-13’ rating. The film has received this rating for intense sequences of violence and action, bloody images, some suggestive references, language and a drug reference.

When it comes to ‘PG-13’ movies in the US, the MPAA believe “some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.” According to the association, parents are strongly cautioned.

However, this is purely a caution and nothing more. In the US, anyone can watch a ‘PG-13’ rated movie in a US cinema.

So, yes, your child can watch Jurassic World: Rebirth in the cinema. Just keep in mind the guidance about violence and bloody images, etc, before sending them on their merry way.

Jurassic World: Rebirth UK age rating

If you live in the UK, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has granted Jurassic World: Rebirth a ‘12A’ for “moderate threat, violence, (and) language.” In the UK, a movie with a ‘12A’ certificate is regarded as suitable for audiences aged 12 or over.

However, children under the age of 12 can watch a ‘12A’, so long as they are accompanied by an adult. As such, if you are a parent to an eight-year-old or nine-year-old, etc, yes, your child can watch Jurassic World: Rebirth in cinemas, they simply require an adult present during the screening.

So, in both the US and the UK, young audiences can watch Jurassic World: Rebirth in the cinema. The only stipulation is that if you live in the UK and your child is under the age of 12 they will need an accompanying adult – which could mean you!

Either way, whether you tag along, or you are going as the accompanying adult, try not to get too scared. Just keep telling yourself it’s only a movie, and mutant dinos aren’t a daily problem.*
