With the summer blockbuster season currently ever-present, and many, many new movies available to view on the big screen (Ballerina, Karate Kid: Legends, Lilo & Stitch, etc), there’s currently a lot of choice and interest in the cinema right now. Eyes of all ages are having a look at the listings to see what’s on offer, with various trips to the flicks being planned.
One film that will no doubt be catching the attention of younger film-goers is the sci-fi horror, M3GAN 2.0. The film is the second entry in the M3GAN film franchise, and focuses on a rogue AI doll who might just be humanity’s last hope.
The official blurb for the film reads:
“Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.
“Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.
“With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I icon is about to meet her match.”
Now, the reason MEGAN 2.0 will almost certainly gain interest with younger audiences is because the original M3GAN became something of a TikTok star back in 2022/2023. A dance move performed by M3GAN in the original film went viral, and lots of young TikTokers suddenly found themselves aware of the character and the film she appeared in.
So, with M3GAN 2.0 due in cinemas this June, there will be many young eyes and minds paying close attention to the marketing of this new sequel. And some of these youngsters will be pestering their parents to take them to see the new movie.
But before anyone agrees to anything, and long before any tickets are booked, parents may wish to know the age rating of M3GAN 2.0, to ensure it is age appropriate. There’s nothing worse than handing over cash for a film, only to turn up at the cinema and release this is not quite the movie you presumed it was.
So, with this in mind, what is the age rating of M3GAN 2.0, and is the film suitable for a child? For all the details, including the age ratings, keep reading.

M3GAN 2.0 US age rating

If you live in the US, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has awarded M3GAN 2.0 a ‘PG-13’ rating. M3GAN 2.0 has received this rating for strong violent content, bloody images, some strong language, sexual material, and brief drug references.
Now, when it comes to ‘PG-13’ movies in the US, the MPAA believe “some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.” According to the association, parents are strongly cautioned.
However, this caution from the MPAA is just a ‘heads-up’ and not a restriction. Anyone can watch a ‘PG-13’ rated movie in a US cinema, the MPAA just ask audiences to take the guidance on board – especially where younger audiences are concerned.

M3GAN 2.0 UK age rating

If you live in the UK, things are considerably different, as M3GAN 2.0 has been given a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has received this rating due to “strong violence, (and) injury detail.”
In the UK, a movie with a ‘15’ certificate is only suitable for audiences aged 15 or over. If the BBFC grant a film a ‘15’ rating, then audience members must fall within this age range to view the film in UK cinemas.
As such, if you are a parent to a ten-year-old, they love sci-fi and horror, and they are begging you to take them to see M3GAN 2.0 at the cinema, unfortunately they will not be permitted to view the movie. This is the rule with UK cinemas, there are no exceptions.

So, depending on where you are located in the world, different rules do apply. In the US the film is available to all, with no restrictions, but parents are cautioned, while in the UK you must be aged 15 or over.
Of course, should you wish to get a flavour of the film before it arrives (or before you hop in the car on the way to your local cinema), you could always check out the original film to see what it is like. The first film should help you judge the overall tone and storyline of this new entry, and this could help to better inform you moving forward.
