1980s

Julia Roberts’ film career began in 1987, with an uncredited role in the movie Firehouse. From here, she appeared in the film, Satisfaction, before popping up in the television movie, Baja Oklahoma.

These roles were small and went largely unnoticed by the wider audience, however, it was her fourth movie, Mystic Pizza, which helped to raise her profile. From here she then continued to appear in other films, before ending the decade with the superb and touching drama, Steel Magnolias, alongside Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, and Daryl Hannah.

1990s

Moving into the 1990s, and this is where Julia Roberts really started to make a name for herself, thanks to her scene-stealing turn in Pretty Woman. Here she played the role of Vivian Ward – a good-natured prostitute, who falls in love with a business man played by Richard Gere.

Pretty Woman was a big hit with audiences, and this bolstered Roberts’ career no-end. It also kick-started a run of great movies, including Flatliners, Sleeping with the Enemy, and Hook with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman.

She then continued her movie career with films such as The Pelican Brief and My Best Friend’s Wedding, as well as Conspiracy Theory and Stepmom. And then in 1999, Roberts re-teamed with Richard Gere for Runaway Bride, and also appeared in the hit romantic comedy, Notting Hill.

2000s

Into the 2000s now, and Roberts kicked off the new decade with another career highlight in the shape of Erin Brockovich – a critically acclaimed film with an equally acclaimed performance. She then followed this up with movies including America’s Sweethearts, The Mexican with Brad Pitt, and a small role in Ocean’s Eleven.

Throughout this decade, Julia Roberts’ film career continued to thrive, with new movies released every year. The only year not to see a new Roberts movie was 2005, but she sure made up for it with two pictures in 2004 (Closer and Ocean’s Twelve) and two in 2006 (The Ant Bully and Charlotte’s Web).

Moving into the 2010s, and Roberts’ continued to star in a string of movies, with films being released on an annual basis until 2018. Movies in this decade included Eat Pray Love, the fantasy film, Mirror Mirror, and Larry Crowne with Tom Hanks.

In 2016, Roberts appeared in the drama-thriller, Money Monster, while in 2017 she provided voice over duties for the animated feature, Smurfs: The Lost Village. She then took on a small break from films following the release of 2018’s Ben is Back.
