Love a good murder-mystery? Then you will be most pleased, as an exciting new film is on the way this summer, which promises to satisfy your inner sleuth.
Based on Richard Osman’s international bestselling novel of the same name, The Thursday Murder Club is coming to Netflix. Arriving in late August, the film boasts an all-star cast and focuses on four retirees – Elizabeth, Ibrahim, Ron, and Joyce – who spend their time solving cold case murders from their retirement home.
Elizabeth is an ex-spy, Ibrahim a former psychiatrist, Ron an old union activist, and Joyce an ex-nurse. They solve murders for fun, but according to Netflix: “When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.”

Directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, etc), The Thursday Murder Club is based on a screenplay by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote. The cast includes Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E. Grant, and Ingrid Oliver, and as far as Columbus is concerned, “this is the finest cast I’ve worked with since Potter.”
Speaking to Netflix, he said: “They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything. They do theatre, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”

The Thursday Murder Club is the first of what could potentially be a whole series of mystery films in this universe. The original novel from Richard Osman has sequels, including The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed, The Last Devil to Die, and The Impossible Fortune, so if this first film does well, expect to see further adaptations.
There’s certainly a great deal of goodwill and clout behind this picture, as well as the potential for longevity from producers who think big. The film is a co-production between Netflix and Steven Spielberg’s production company, Amblin, so there is a long history of entertainment behind this film.
Netflix announced its partnership with Amblin back in 2021. Speaking at the time, Amblin Partners Chairman, Steven Spielberg, said: “At Amblin, storytelling will forever be at the centre of everything we do, and from the minute (Netflix Co-CEO) Ted (Sarandos) and I started discussing a partnership, it was abundantly clear that we had an amazing opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways.”
The Thursday Murder Club is one of these new stories. The new film is hoping to prove the Netflix-Amblin partnership to be a fruitful one.
Should you wish to check out The Thursday Murder Club, the film will make its debut on August 28th. And yes, before you check the calendar, that is a Thursday.
The film is one of a number of new pictures heading to Netflix this summer. Other top titles hoping to entertain subscribers include The Old Guard 2, Brick, and Happy Gilmore 2.
