In 1968, supernatural horror movie, Rosemary’s Baby made its debut. The film – based on the novel of the same name by Ira Levin – followed the story of recently wed couple, Guy and Rosemary Woodhouse and their encounter with a Satanic cult.

In the movie, Guy and Rosemary move into a new home, where they hope to live a wonderful life together. However, when Rosemary falls pregnant she finds herself slipping into a dire situation, which may have a sinister connection to her new neighbours.

Released to critical praise, as well as a very healthy box-office ($33.4 million from a $3.2 million budget), Rosemary’s Baby was a huge success when it hit cinemas back in 1968. As such, the film has continued to be a firm favourite amongst horror fans and has spawned a number of follow-up movies designed to expand the original story.

Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

As noted above, the first entry in the series was 1968’s Rosemary’s Baby. In the movie, Guy and Rosemary Woodhouse move to the Bramford – a large apartment building in New York.

Shortly after they move in, the couple meet their new neighbours, Roman and Minnie Castevet. At first this elderly couple appear harmless, but something isn’t quite right with the Castevets.

A short while later, Rosemary falls pregnant and the neighbours are keen to help her out wherever they can. But the more time she spends around Minnie and Roman, the more Rosemary grows suspicious of their intentions.

Here’s what It’s A Stampede! movie critic Alex Wiggan said about Rosemary’s Baby: “Many movies have attempted to copy what Rosemary’s Baby does, but almost all have failed. The film is a masterclass in implied horror and suspense, as well as a must-see for anyone looking for an unsettling couple of hours.”

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby (1976)

Eight years after the release of Rosemary’s Baby, Paramount Television and ABC attempted to revive the property with a direct-to-TV sequel. The sequel would pick up after the events of the original, albeit with an almost entirely new cast.

In the movie, eight years have passed since Rosemary Woodhouse gave birth to a boy named Andrew. That boy is now under the watchful eye of a Satanic cult, led by Roman and Minnie Castevet.

Here’s what It’s A Stampede! said about Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby: “Don’t waste your precious time on this dross. Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby is a yawn-inducing snooze-fest which at best is a one-time watch, but the likelihood is few will ever actually finish it.”

Rating: 0.5 out of 5.

Apartment 7A (2024)

Forty-eight years after the debut of Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby, Paramount returned to the movie series, only this time via a prequel. The film – titled Apartment 7A – would take place shortly before the events of Rosemary’s Baby and would be released on streaming service, Paramount+, as well as on video-on-demand platforms.

In Apartment 7A, the year is 1965 and dancer Theresa ‘Terry’ Gionoffrio is keen to make it in New York. But when Terry suffers a significant setback, which has a knock-on effect on her career and her income, she doesn’t know what to do.

However, good fortune is just around the corner when elderly couple Minnie and Roman Castevet befriend Terry and provide a solution to her problems. They offer her a new home in the Bramford building, and are able to connect her with someone who could kick-start her dance career.

Not wishing to turn down a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Terry moves into her new apartment. However, she soon comes to regret her involvement with new neighbours, Minnie and Roman.

Here’s what It’s A Stampede! said about Apartment 7A: “There’s no creativity here, no imagination, and simply no point.”

Rating: 2 out of 5.
