In Twisters, Kate Carter and her team are student storm chasers. When they’re not at college they spend their days tracking tornados in Oklahoma, monitoring their impact and collecting data.

The team is fairly experienced in what they do and believe they have developed what is set to be a revolutionary new way of curbing the impact of extreme weather. However, while out conducting a field test, things don’t go as planned and three of Kate’s team are killed, leaving Kate and her colleague, Javi as the only survivors.

Five years later, Kate is now living and working in New York, where she monitors the weather. One day, she is approached by Javi who now works for the military and is involved in creating a new piece of tech which could save lives in the event of extreme weather.

Javi believes Kate could play a key role in perfecting this technology, if she is willing to assist him. Kate reluctantly agrees, and gives up one week of her time to return to Oklahoma to help.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Twisters stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos. The film is an action disaster picture, which is a loose, stand-alone sequel to 1996’s Twister, and is now playing UK and US cinemas.

Do you need to have watched the original film to enjoy and/or understand this new picture? Heck, no!

While I highly recommend you check out Twister, because it is one of the best action films of the 1990s, you don’t need to know a single thing about that movie to become invested in this one. All you need do is ask yourself, do I want to loose myself in an action-packed summer blockbuster which is high on spectacle?

If the answer is ‘yes’, then go and see Twisters. The movie is pure popcorn entertainment filled with special effects, a decent story, and a fab performance from Glen Powell as tornado wrangler, Tyler Owens.

Playing social media influencer, Tyler, Powell is the stand-out star of the movie. At times he’s brash, and often a self-important douche, but the actor brings oodles of charisma to the part and he ensures Tyler remains in the mind as the credits role.

As for all the other characters, well, they are less compelling, and in all honesty are a bit of a weak link in the picture. Never enough to derail the film, but if Twisters has a key issue it’s in this area of the film.

However, if you’re off to the cinema to watch Twisters, I doubt very much you’ll care about the human element as you probably just want to see death, destruction, and dramatic drizzle. Well, don’t worry, Twisters caters accordingly, and you’ll certainly feel satisfied in this department.

Highlights of the film include a tense opening sequence which sees Kate’s team almost entirely wiped out; a mid-movie storm at a rodeo; and a climatic finale involving a ruddy big tornado and a movie theatre. All of these sequences are superbly put together, and effortless convey the horror of a natural disaster.

Outside of this there is a simmering romance between Kate and Tyler, which bubbles along nicely; and plenty of techno-babble, gadgets, and gizmos to keep weather nerds happy. Oh, and if this wasn’t enough, there’s the sheer joy of seeing Glen Powell looking rather dashing in a cowboy hat.

You may not have realised you needed this in your life, but you do. You really do.

While some of the human characters could do with an uplift and a personality transplant, it’s fair to say Twisters is a marvellous blockbuster. The film contains enough action and drama to overshadow some occasional dips in the pace, and Glen Powell essentially steals the film.

If you’re itching for a good disaster movie this summer then rejoice, it’s here! Grab some popcorn, a bucket-sized drink, and take your big coat – there’s a storm coming!

Rating: 4 out of 5.
