Now streaming on YouTube is the short horror fan-film, The Spider. The short – written and directed by Andy Chen – stars Chandler Riggs, Holgie Forrester, and Carl Addicott, and is a body horror reworking of the Spider-Man mythology.

In the film, Peter Parker is bitten by a spider and his body begins to change. However, instead of developing amazing abilities which he can use for the betterment of mankind, the bite transforms Peter into a human spider!

Since landing on YouTube a week ago, The Spider has clocked up over one million views. The combination of horror and comic book lore is clearly a big draw for streamers, and I’m in no doubt the view counts will continue to rise in the coming days.

I expect the short runtime also helps. Clocking in at nine minutes, The Spider is perfectly suited to the TikTok generation who want short sharp bursts of story, and that’s pretty much what you get here.

The film starts with the bite, then works its way through the transformation. We all know what happens to Peter when he gets bitten by a spider, so The Spider is wise enough not to faff around with any plot points beforehand and just get down to business.

Is The Spider amazing? No, not especially, and it’s not particularly original either as the 2001 horror movie, Earth vs. The Spider already covered this sort of thing.

But while The Spider may not be delivering entirely new material, it provides a decent ‘what if?’ story. It also makes the most of its low budget to bring some nice visuals, with an excellent final scene guaranteed to leave audiences wondering what happens next.

Should you wish to check out The Spider for yourself, head on over to YouTube.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
