In 2016, British author Lynda La Plante published the crime thriller, Tennison. Set in 1973, the book revolved around 22-year-old police officer, Jane Tennison, as she leaves the Metropolitan Police Training Academy and works on her first murder case.

The book was conceived as a prequel to the award-winning ITV television series, Prime Suspect. Tennison was written as a prequel to the show, to fill in the back story of lead character DCI Jane Tennison.

Upon publication, Tennison proved popular with readers and was accompanied by a second book titled Hidden Killers. In this instalment, Detective Constable Tennison becomes involved in a multiple rape case.

From here, more Jane Tennison novels soon followed. The story expanded, new details about the character were added, and the series was a hit.
