In 2002, Jane Turner and Gina Riley launched their Australian sitcom, Kath & Kim. The humorous show followed the story of suburban mother, Kath Day-Knight (Turner), and her adult daughter Kim Craig (Riley).

The focus of the show was on the day-to-day life of both characters, as well as their trials and tribulations as mother and daughter. In addition to Kath and Kim, the series also centred around Kim’s sport-obsessed best friend Sharon Strzelecki (Magda Szubanski), Kath’s boyfriend-turned-husband Kel Knight (Glenn Robbins), and Kim’s husband Brett Craig (Peter Rowsthorn). 

During the course of the show’s first season, the series captured the attention of audiences with its comedic observations and its playful tone. From Kel’s attempts to make a gourmet sausage to Kim’s ‘Celine Cuisine’ weight loss plan (inspired by Celine Dion’s diet), the series was daft, silly, and at times very clever.

Due to the popularity of season one, Kath & Kim returned to screens the following year for a second season. More seasons soon followed, along with a couple of movies, as well as two anniversary specials which celebrated the popularity of the show.

To say Kath & Kim became successful during the course of its run would be an understatement. Not only was the series a hit in Australia, it was sold around the world, finding fans in various countries including the UK, Canada, the US and beyond.

Kath & Kim: Season One (2002)

The first season of Kath & Kim aired in Australia in the 2002. The season introduced the core characters, Kath, Kim, Sharon, Kel, and Brett, and ran for eight episodes.

The episodes in season one included:

Kath & Kim: Season Two (2003)

Da Kath & Kim Code (2005)

After the conclusion of the third season, Kath & Kim next popped up in the television movie, Da Kath & Kim Code. The film featured a guest cast which included Barry Humphries, Michael Bublé, and The Wiggles, and including spoof references to Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code.

Kath & Kim: Season Four (2007) 

After a two-year break, Kath & Kim returned with a fourth and final season of the show. This season ran eight episodes and included the following episodes:

Kath & Kimderella (2012)

Following the conclusion of the series, Kath & Kim appeared to have come to an end, however, in 2012 the sitcom was revived via a second movie. Released theatrically, Kath & Kimderella featured a guest cast which included Barry Humphries Richard E. Grant, and Alex Perry, and essentially concluded the series.

Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life (2022)

Twenty years after Kath & Kim made its debut, and ten years after the release of Kath & Kimderella, Jane Turner and Gina Riley returned to screens for two anniversary TV specials to celebrate the success of the show. The first of the specials was Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life.

Kath and Kim: 20 Preposterous Years (2022)

The second and final anniversary special was Kath and Kim: 20 Preposterous Years. This special aired in Australia a day after Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life.
