New to Netflix is the true crime documentary, Lover Killer Stalker. Directed by Sam Hobkinson, the docu-film tells a twisted tale of harassment and murder.

In the documentary, 35-year-old Dave Kroupa is recently single following the break down of his previous relationship. After moving to a new place in Nebraska, Dave joins the dating site, Plenty of Fish where he hopes to meet likeminded women.

A few days later, while at work, Dave meets a woman. He presumes this will be a chance encounter, but when he logs onto Plenty of Fish a short while later, he sees she has a profile on the site.

The two start talking, begin dating, and everything seem to be going well. However, after two weeks she suggests they move in together, which Dave is not so keen on.

After telling her it’s too soon to move in, Dave starts to receive worrying messages. Her attitude seems to have changed dramatically, and soon he finds himself in a deadly situation.

It’s another week on Netflix, and another sinister true crime story. As with previous documentaries on the streaming platform, Lover Killer Stalker lifts the lid on the darker side of life, and brings a disturbing case to everyone’s attention.

It’s a case which involves a heck of a lot of stalking and one unhinged individual. There’s arson, a missing person, and a murder investigation too, making for a fascinating watch.

But Lover Killer Stalker also has one very significant twist in its tale. It’s a twist which turns the docu-film on its head, and adds something surprising to the back-half of this story.

This twist doesn’t make this an exceptional documentary, but it does make for engaging viewing. If you have an interest in criminal cases, then you will want to take a look at Lover Killer Stalker.

In terms of the general construction of the docu-film, it is fairly nuts and bolts stuff. This is documentary making 101, with various people popping up in dimly lit rooms talking about their involvement in the case.

Information is teased, ominous music plays in the background, and all the key players are put in place. It’s pretty much what you would expect, and while it’s fine, there’s no particular creative flair.

However, the hook here is the story itself, which is fascinating and utterly terrifying. This is not a straight forward case, and once the film reaches the halfway point the truth begins to set in.

I’m not going to spoil the full details of the case, which is why I’ve kept the premise of Lover Killer Stalker fairly vague, and that’s why only Dave Kroupa’s name is mentioned. Beyond this, you’ll need to watch the documentary for yourself to find out who else was involved and how their lives were impacted for the worst.

As with all true crime stories, there are victims at the heart of this tale, so I don’t want to dismiss this as mere entertainment. I also don’t want to name check certain people, due to the nature of this case.

What I will say is if you’re intrigued by crime stories then Lover Killer Stalker is a documentary for you. It will hold your attention and you will want to see it through to the end.

Netflix has produced various true crime docu-films and series over the years, and often they blur into one. Lover Killer Stalker could easily fall into this same trap, because the way it is presented is nothing out of the ordinary.

However, because the crime here is particularly disturbing, and feels like the plot of a Hollywood movie, there’s no denying this docu-film stands out from the crowd. Should you want to take a look, Lover Killer Stalker is now streaming.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
