In the British short film, By Any Other Name, Northerner Diane travels down to London in search of her young deaf sister, Rose. Rose has been missing for the past seven years, with no trace of her anywhere, but it finally appears as if there is some information about her whereabouts.
However, the news is not good. It seems as if Rose is currently caught up in the sex, drug, and human trafficking trade, which is putting her life in danger.

Written and directed by Daniel Deville, and made in association with the Academy Award® winning Slick Films, By Any Other Name stars Jade Anouka and Lauren Planner. The film lifts the lid on the dark underbelly of London’s sex trade and is a moving picture about one woman’s tireless search for her loved one.
By Any Other Name centres its story around Diane, with a specific focus on the pain and heartbreak she endures in her quest to locate Rose. The film makes it clear this has been a long and desperate search, which at times has felt pretty hopeless, but Diane refuses to give up.
I won’t spoil the outcome of Diane’s plight, but I will say it is truly captivating. From start to finish, the film manages to tell Diane’s seven-year journey in a very short space of time, filling the screen with plenty of emotion along the way.

Running just under 25 minutes in length, and featuring a haunting score by composer Magdalena Maria Herfurtner, By Any Other Name is a beautiful film, which is expertly written and directed by Daniel Deville. Bradford-born Deville has an eye for detail, and an understanding of how to tease out information while maintaining momentum, and this keeps By Any Other Name ticking along nicely.
He stages his film perfectly, inserting some suspenseful scenes into the story, and the end result is a superb piece. I’m happy to say that By Any Other Name has (not surprisingly) already won a plethora of awards, and I am in no doubt it will pick up many more as it continues to work its way around the film festival circuit.
If you get the opportunity to catch By Any Other Name, be sure to take a look. Daniel has a bright future ahead of him, with By Any Other Name being an accomplished picture on his CV.
