Recurring characters in the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies

Everyone knows the Jurassic Park movie series is packed with lots of dinosaurs; ranging from the T-Rex and the velociraptors, to the Dilophosaurus and the Indominus Rex. But in addition to the dinos, the film series also includes plenty of human characters too.

In fact, the films are crammed with them. Each ‘Jurassic’ movie introduces a succession of new humans, from Ray Arnold in Jurassic Park, to Sir Benjamin Lockwood in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and they keep on coming!

Thing is, the human characters in the ‘Jurassic’ movie series don’t last too long. Whether it’s good guys like Eddie Carr (The Lost World: Jurassic Park) or Mr. Udesky (Jurassic Park III), or villains such as Dennis Nedry (Jurassic Park) or Vic Hoskins (Jurassic World), sooner or later they end up as dinosaur food.

The first male character to die in the ‘Jurassic’ series was an unnamed dinosaur handler who got killed by a velociraptor in the opening act of Jurassic Park. Meanwhile, the first female character to die was Zara Young, who was attacked by Pteranodons in Jurassic World, before being swallowed by the Mosasaurus in a rather grisly death.

No matter if they’re good, bad, or somewhere in between, humans largely end up as lunch – it’s just what happens! And while some do survive becoming the next dish on the dino menu (Amanda Kirby, Dr. Sarah Harding, Zach Mitchell, etc), they mostly slink away never to be seen again.

But there are a select few who not only survive, but (foolishly) come back for more. Some human characters appear multiple times in the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World franchise, becoming recurring characters in the process.

Recurring characters in the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World movies

Below is a list of all the characters who appear in more than one Jurassic Park / Jurassic World movie. Only a handful of characters have pulled off this feat, so consider this lot part of a very select crowd.

Dr. Alan Grant – Three movies

Played by Sam Neill in Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, and Jurassic World Dominion. Dr. Grant survives the events of the films.

Dr. Ellie Sattler – Three movies

Played by Laura Dern in Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, and Jurassic World Dominion. Dr. Sattler survives the events of the films.

Dr. Ian Malcolm – Four movies

Played by Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World Dominion. Dr. Malcolm survives the events of the films.

John Hammond – Two movies

Played by Richard Attenborough in Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Hammond survives the events of the two films, but dies off screen before the events of Jurassic World.

Dr. Henry Wu – Four movies

Played by BD Wong in Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World Dominion. Dr. Wu survives the events of the films.

Tim Murphy – Two movies

Played by Joseph Mazzello in Jurassic Park, and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Tim survives the events of the two films.

Lex Murphy – Two movies

Played by Ariana Richards in Jurassic Park, and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Lex survives the events of the two films.

Owen Grady – Three movies

Played by Chris Pratt in Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World Dominion. Owen survives the events of the films.

Claire Dearing – Three movies

Played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World Dominion. Claire survives the events of the films.

Barry Sembéne – Two movies

Played by Omar Sy in Jurassic World, and Jurassic World Dominion. Barry survives the events of the films.

Franklin Webb – Two movies

Played by Justice Smith in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World Dominion. Franklin survives the events of the films.

Dr. Zia Rodriguez – Two movies

Played by Daniella Pineda in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World Dominion. Dr. Rodriguez survives the events of the films.

Maisie Lockwood – Two movies

Played by Isabella Sermon in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World Dominion. Maisie survives the events of the films.

Lewis Dodgson – Two movies

Played by Cameron Thor in Jurassic Park. Survives the events of the movie.
Played by Campbell Scott in Jurassic World Dominion. Is killed by multiple Dilophosaurus.

Beyond the human returnees

There are plenty of iconic heroes and villains in the Jurassic films, but reappearances are limited to just 14 humans. However, outside of the 14 humans listed above, there is room for one other, non-dinosaur character.

Mr. DNA – Two movies

Mr. DNA is a cartoon character that resembles an anthropomorphic DNA helix. The non-human character, who appears in Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, is included in the films as a way to convey some all-important exposition to key characters (as well as to the audience).

Mr. DNA is voiced by Greg Burson in Jurassic Park.
Mr. DNA is voiced by Colin Trevorrow in Jurassic World.
