List of the Dune books in order

In 1965, author Frank Herbert published the science-fiction novel, Dune. Set in the distant future, the book revolved around a desert planet named Arrakis (also known as ‘Dune’), which is the only source of a valuable life-extending drug known as melange.

Upon making its debut, Dune was well-received. The book was praised for its uniqueness, as well its sprawling story, and today it is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction stories of all-time.

The book is not only continuously discussed, with its themes carefully considered and studied, it has also been adapted into a series of movies, television series, and games. And not only that, but Dune was the first in a long line of novels, which continued with the sequel Dune Messiah in 1969.

The Dune novels in order

Before he passed away in 1986, author Frank Herbert published six Dune novels. The series was then continued from 1999 onward by Herbert’s son, Brian, working with science-fiction author Kevin J. Anderson.

Between Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the pair wrote and published several collections of prequel novels, set before the events of Dune. The writing duo also completed two Dune sequels, which were partially based on notes written by Frank Herbert, but not discovered until a decade after his death.

In total, 23 Dune books have been published so far. The books are as follows:
