In 2014, US author Alyssa Maxwell published the novel Murder at Breakers – A Gilded Newport Mystery. The book told the story of twenty-one-year-old reporter, Emma Cross, who witnesses a murder at a grand summer home.

In the book, Emma is the second cousin to millionaire Cornelius Vanderbilt, and finds herself on the guest list for a ball at the Vanderbilt summer house. But during the course of the evening, Emma witnesses the murder of Cornelius’ financial secretary, leading to a puzzling mystery case.

Upon release, Murder at Breakers was a hit with readers, and it was quickly followed by a second novel, Murder at Marble House. This in turn was followed by a third book in 2015, and a fourth in 2016.

Over time, more books soon followed, building up a collection of murder-mystery stories all under the banner title ‘A Gilded Newport Mystery‘. The novels even inspired a Hallmark movie!
