In 1976, supernatural horror movie, The Omen, made its way into cinemas. The film – based on the novel of the same name by David Seltzer – told the story of an American diplomat and his wife, who take on the care of another child when they lose their baby during child birth.

Five years later after adopting the child, it becomes clear this is no ordinary boy. All evidence points to him being the Antichrist, which not only puts his parents in danger, but also threatens the safety of the world!

Upon making its debut in cinemas, The Omen proved to be a box-office success, making it a profitable picture for movie studio, 20th Century Fox. As such, an Omen sequel was swiftly put into production, which in turn was soon followed by further entries.

But how many Omen movies are there, and what is the correct viewing order of the films? If these sorts of questions are keeping you up at night, you had best continue reading.

Below you will find all the details about The Omen movie series, including a list of the films in order. So, whether you’re a lapsed fan of the series, or a complete newbie, this is the information you need to know.

The Omen (1976)

As noted above, the first entry in the series is The Omen. Set in London, England, the movie follows the story of American diplomat Robert Thorn and his wife Kathy.

In the film, Kathy goes into labour, but unfortunately loses her baby. However, before she is made aware of the tragedy, Robert is approached by the hospital chaplain who suggests the couple adopt a parentless baby instead.

Unsure of how Kathy will react to the proposal, Robert agrees to the adoptation, but keeps it a secret. The couple then take the baby home, name him Damien, and raise him as their own.

Five years later, a series of strange and shocking events take place which centre around Damien. Robert is then approached by a holy Father, who informs him that Damien bears the mark of the beast, 666, and is the Antichrist.

Damien: Omen II (1978)

Picking up the story seven years after the events of The Omen, Damien Thorn is now living in Chicago in the care of his Uncle Richard and Aunt Ann. After a series of bizarre events take place, it soon becomes clear no one is safe with Damien around.

Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981)

Taking place 21 years after the events of Damien: The Omen II, the story continues in Omen III: The Final Conflict, with a now 33-year-old Damien working as the CEO of an international conglomerate. In the years between the two films, Damien has embraced his lineage and prepares to fulfil his destiny, but before he can do this he must halt the second coming of Christ.

Omen IV: The Awakening (1991)

For the next instalment in the Omen series, the story moved away from the big screen and onto the small screen for the television movie, Omen IV: The Awakening. In this film, a Virginia congressman and his wife adopt a young girl named Delia who appears to be at the centre of a series of strange events.

The Omen (2006)

Following the TV broadcast of Omen IV: The Awakening in 1991, the Omen movie series went on hiatus for 15 years. When it returned, rather than continue the series, 20th Century Fox opted to remake the original movie instead.

Released on the 6th of June 2006 (aka 6/6/6), the film was essentially a straight forward copy of The Omen from 1976. This film – also titled The Omen – was designed to attract a new generation of cinemagoers who didn’t grew up with the series, and hopefully reboot the series moving forward.

The First Omen (2024)

Although 2006’s Omen remake faired OK at the box-office, it was not a hit with critics, and general audiences seemed largely unmoved by it. As a result, The Omen series went on another hiatus, until it was revived once again with a new entry: The First Omen.

Designed as a prequel to the original 1976 version of The Omen (and ignoring the remake completely), The First Omen is a supernatural story which depicts events prior to the birth of Damien. In the movie, an American woman uncovers a sinister conspiracy after she is sent to work at a church in Rome.
