Understanding Penny Dreadful

In 2014, the first season of Penny Dreadful made its debut. The show – which featured a cast that included Reeve Carney, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Billy Piper, and Josh Hartnett – was set in the 19th Century, ran for eight episodes, and proved popular enough for a second season.
This second season hit screens in 2015, and ran for ten episodes. Once again, Penny Dreadful proved to be a success with viewers, and a third season aired in 2016.
The third season ran for nine episodes and would prove to be the last. John Logan, the creator of Penny Dreadful announced the story had reached a natural conclusion, and the series was to be wrapped up after a 27-episode run.
But while this was the end for Penny Dreadful, Logan set to work on a new show set in the 20th Century. This new instalment – titled Penny Dreadful: City of Angels – featured a new cast and followed the story of two detectives who investigate a murder in LA.
Unfortunately, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels was not as popular as its predecessor and was promptly cancelled after just one season. The show began and ended in 2020, after just ten episodes, and this effectively brought the Penny Dreadful universe to an end.
