Understanding the 9-1-1 shows

As noted above, 9-1-1 made its debut in 2018, with the first episode (‘Pilot‘) airing on January 3rd. The series was a big hit with audiences, and it remained on air until March.

Due to the popularity of the first season, a second season was quickly put into production which ran from September 2018 to March 2019. This was then followed by a third season which aired from September 2019 until May 2020.

During the course of the show’s third season, a spin-off show was commissioned. This spin-off show, which was titled 9-1-1: Lone Star, followed the story of various emergency service departments in Austin, Texas.

The first episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star made its debut in January 2020, and ran for 10 episodes. The series proved popular with viewers and was commissioned for a second season.

The second season of 9-1-1: Lone Star aired while season four of 9-1-1 was on screens. Both shows then continued to remain on air as 9-1-1 ran through seasons five and six, and 9-1-1: Lone Star moved through seasons three and four.

In May 2023, Fox (the station which aired both shows) announced it was cancelling 9-1-1, but renewing 9-1-1: Lone Star for a new season. But this wasn’t the end for 9-1-1, as ABC quickly announced it would pick 9-1-1 up, and continue the show for a seventh season.

However, due to the actors’ and writers’ strikes of 2023, both shows were then temporarily put on hold until filming could resume. When production restarted, it was announced 9-1-1: Lone Star would conclude with its fifth season, while 9-1-1 would continue into season eight and nine.

In 2025, a new show, 9-1-1 Nashville was announced.
