This month, notorious horror franchise, Saw, makes its return with the release of the tenth instalment, Saw X. The movie – directed by Kevin Greutert – stars Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith, and tells a new side-story, which takes place between the events of 2004’s Saw and 2005’s Saw II.

As with the previous entries in the Saw franchise, Saw X promises to be a gore-infused, blood-soaked horror flick. The Saw film series is known for death and violence, so those gearing up to see Saw X should expect more of the same with this new picture.

But how violent is Saw X? And more importantly, what is the age rating of Saw X?

In the US, Saw X has been granted an ‘R’ rating by the Motion Picture Association (MPA). Saw X is rated ‘R’ due to grisly bloody violence and torture, language and some drug use.

Movies with an ‘R’ rating are classed as restricted, and audiences are warned to be cautious. ‘R’ rated movies can be watched by anyone, but audiences under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

In the UK, Saw X has been awarded an ‘18’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The BBFC was been given an ‘18’ certificate because of “strong bloody violence, (and) gore.”

An ‘18’ certificate is suitable for audiences of 18 years or over. In the UK, audience members who are below this age are not permitted to watch the movie in cinemas (irrespective of who you go with).

The BBFC has released details related to the rating of Saw X, to make it clear to audiences why the movie has been given an ‘18’ certificate in the UK. For example, in terms of the movie’s level of violence, the BBFC believes the film is at the highest end of the scale.

In the notes for the film, the BBFC said: “There are scenes of strong bloody violence which dwell on the infliction of pain and injury. Scenes of strong gore include a bloody decapitation, disembowelment and sight of severed limbs.

“In one scene, a victim is forced to extract his own brain matter in order to save his life. Other moments include a waterboarding scene involving blood and a man’s eyeballs being sucked through vacuum tubes.”

The BBFC’s website also gives very useful information regarding the level of horror, sex, violence, and bad language. This provides a clear explanation of what to expect in the film, and why it is not suitable for all ages.
