New to Shudder this month is the mind-boggling horror movie, Perpetrator. The film is written and directed by Jennifer Reeder and stars Kiah McKirnan, Taylor Kinkead, and Alicia Silverstone.
In the movie, Jonny is on the cusp of her 18th birthday when her father sends her to live with family friend, Hildie Baptiste. From here she starts a new school and makes new friends.
But Jonny appears to be going through some changes, which only Hildie can explain. These changes revolve around blood and a family secret.

I’ll cut to the chase with this one, as I have very clear feelings about Perpetrator: This movie is absolute bobbins. Perpetrator is 100 minutes of complete and utter nonsense, which attempts to place style over substance but fails completely.
The film is weird to the point of annoying; large chunks of it are mind-numbingly slow and boring; and heaven knows what direction or motivation Alicia Silverstone was given in this movie. Most of her scenes as Hildie Baptiste revolve around her acting strange, while on at least two occasions she suggestively pokes her fingers into objects with little explanation.
During the course of the movie, I contemplated poking my fingers into somewhere too – namely, my own eyes. Ultimately I thought better of it, but I’m now wondering if it would have saved me from viewing this rubbish.
Watching Perpetrator left me frustrated and irritated. These are not things I want from my movie-watching experience.

I’d like to say Perpetrator has some redeeming features, but I’m struggling to come up with anything. There’s some twisted, David Lynch-style moments in the movie, which I guess some horror fans may appreciate, but it did nothing for me.
Unless you have the patience of a saint, you like your movies weird and kooky, or you have some bizarre desire to watch this picture, I suggest giving it a miss.
