Speeding its way into cinemas this August is the biographical sports drama, Gran Turismo. The movie is directed by Neill Blomkamp and stars Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Djimon Hounsou.

Based on the PlayStation video game series of the same name, and inspired by a true story, Gran Turismo follows the story of a teenage video game player who aspires to be a race car driver. The gamer in the spotlight is real-life British professional driver, Jann Mardenborough, who becomes the focus of the picture.

When Gran Turismo arrives in cinemas this month, it is likely to be a popular film. The Gran Turismo video games are successful, with their own in-built fan base, and the story has youth appeal – especially amongst teens.

But what is the age rating of Gran Turismo? Is it suitable for teens?

In the US, Gran Turismo has been rated ‘PG-13’ by the Motion Picture Association (MPA). This rating means Gran Turismo is deemed suitable for a teenager in the US.

A ‘PG-13’ rated movie can be watched by audiences below the age of 13, but the MPA suggests parents should be cautious with pre-teens. A film which carries a ‘PG-13’ rating contains some material that could be inappropriate for younger audiences.

In the UK, Gran Turismo carries a ‘12A’ certificate. This certificate – awarded by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) – means Gran Turismo is deemed suitable for anyone aged 12 or above, so is perfectly fine for teenagers.

The ‘12A’ certificate carried by Gran Turismo is the same certificate given to films such as Barbie and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One. A film with a ‘12A’ certificate can be watched by anyone below the age of 12, but audiences under the age of 12 require an accompanying adult to view the film, as some material in the movie has been deemed unsuitable for young cinema-goers.

While Gran Turismo carries different age ratings in the US and the UK, the ratings have similar meanings: Both the MPA and the BBFC deem Gran Turismo suitable for teenagers and can be watched by all. However, parents are cautioned about some material in the film, and in the UK, audiences under the age of 12 will require parental supervision.
